Detective Stabler is attacked and temporarily blinded when arresting a child molester (Arye Gross) who suffers from schizophrenia. Disturbed by what has been done to her partner, Detective Benson tries to sabotage New York's case against the man and have him put on death row in Louisiana instead. Due to her own conflict on interest, ADA Novak tries to bend the rules in the opposite direction and have the man acquitted. The situation is resolved when the District Attorney reminds Novak that executing a mentally ill prisoner is illegal and threatens to pull her license unless she acts as a voice for the prosecution. The schizophrenic is sent to a New York jail and Benson admits that her interference almost caused a miscarriage of justice.

Special appearance by Sam Waterston as DA Jack McCoy.

Jo Marlowe, Stabler's old partner before SVU, becomes the new ADA for the SVU team and enlists the help of Benson and Stabler in the case of two young girls, presumably left to die in a burning house by their father (Kevin Anderson). Upon further investigation by the SVU squad, however, it is discovered that the father did not set the fire that consumed his two daughters, later exposing the incorrect assumptions of a fire marshal (P.J. Benjamin) with the help of an independent pyrotechnic investigator (Brad Dourif).

Special appearance by Sam Waterston as DA Jack McCoy.
Based on the Cameron Todd Willingham case.

Este evento se suscitó antes del estreno de la temporada 20 de Law & Order (2009),  en este evento se reunieron una docena de figuras del presente y pasado de la serie en el juzgado ficticio donde se llevaron a cabo las grabaciones del programa, que, junto a Gunsmoke, es el drama televisivo de mayor trayectoria en EU,

También estuvo presente Steve Zirnkilton, cuya sonora voz declara cada semana: “En el sistema judicial penal...”.

Sam Waterston, quien se unió a Law & Order en 1994, dijo que a la serie, cuyos guiones se inspiran en casos de la vida real, jamás se le agotará el material.
